Conditioning for golf sounds like an oxymoron doesn’t it? But let me ask you this. Do you feel stress in your body during or after a golf swing? I’m referring to physical stress. The muscles tightening; the lower back stiffening; the joints aching; or just plain physical fatigue. The reason I ask is to make you aware that conditioning for golf will help eliminate all the above.

I’ve written many articles pertaining to the traumatic effect the golf swing can have on the body. Swinging a 3 foot plus lever (club) at up to 100 mph in a very dynamic and sometimes uncomfortable position (golf posture) will abuse your body quickly if you have not prepared your muscles from both a strength and flexibility standpoint.

Physical breakdown of the body is a common occurrence for golfers. Many golfers don’t realize the intense pressure the golf swing causes, and yet they’ll deal with aches and pains through their entire golfing career.

It doesn’t have to be that way!

Golf is an athletic movement and you should physical prepare your body to perform, like any other athlete would for his or her sport.

Doesn’t that make sense?

I see golfers every day on the range and the golf course who are physically broken. They have locked up shoulders, inhibiting their ability to rotate fully; they have no core strength (most golfers are sporting too many pounds in the middle) to produce power and distance; poor hamstring flexibility, making it impossible to maintain golf poster; the upper back muscles are weak and tight causing the rounded upper back, eliminating any chance of proper spine angle.

I could go on and on, but I think you’re getting the picture.

I don’t know if golfers are in denial of the importance of conditioning for golf, or just don’t want to put any effort into that aspect of the game. But either way, it is inevitable that a weak and restricted body will have no chance at maximizing potential. It’s a physical impossibility.

Conditioning for golf should be taken seriously!

Everyone’s a poet.

Of course, everyone’s a critic, too! This means that
there are plenty of opportunities to heighten our awareness
of words and how we use them.

Words create pictures, and just as a painter uses a combination
of colors and strokes to express a concept, we offer an artistic
rendering of thoughts through carefully chosen words.

Our linguistic intelligence is what allows us to both recognize
and generate vivid word vignettes. Whether you enjoy novels,
biographies, mysteries, sonnets, haiku, song lyrics, conversations,
soliloquies, or newspaper stories, you can develop greater word
awareness by focusing on descriptive phrases.

In our everyday speech, we tend to speak in phrases and
punctuate these with expressions, pauses, gestures, or laughter.
Although the words themselves convey meaning, the total picture
we create is a combination of inflection, context, juxtaposition,
and even eye contact.

Don’t think you have your own personal poetry style? Think again.
You use words in your own way, and it’s likely that, given an
assignment to express a particular concept, your version would
have recognizable elements.

Try this test: describe a birthday cake.

There’s a good chance that you would use words to express
the shape, flavor, color, decoration, ingredients, size, and
presentation of a cake, and that the precise way you do that
would be unique when compared to others’ descriptions. In
addition, you’re likely to come up with a different description
if asked to do so a month from now.

You can easily and enjoyably boost your word awareness by

1) selecting a particular cue word as a trigger for mindfulness, or

2) focusing on phrases used in specific settings.

Better yet, try both!

By using a particular word as a mindfulness trigger, you can
watch how others create poetic representations of the same
element.

Here it is: morsel.

Listening for a specific word will develop your ability to
make distinctions in the way it is used and allow you to
watch for subtle variations. Does “morsel” refer to
something creamy or chewy? Is it savory or sweet?

To play with poetry and mindfulness at the same time,
notice phrases used to describe food. Listen to them
with an ear for rhythm, and picture them as lines of a poem.

Read menu descriptions, food articles or cookbooks and
be aware of the adjectives most likely to get your mouth
watering. Sensual words like “succulent” and “luscious”
elicit physiological responses. Pay attention to those, and
listen for the phrases you hear that create especially vivid
sense experiences.

Linking word pictures with taste helps us anchor our
linguistic intelligence with our bodily intelligence, and this
makes our mouths very happy indeed.

Premiership 2005/2006 Preview

Two of those - Chelsea and Arsenal - meet on 7th August in the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season, the Community Shield. As if any further spice was needed - the on-going Ashley Cole tapping-up saga looks set to ensure that meetings between these two London rivals are tense and feisty affairs.

A look at each of the three sides can point us in the direction of the best bets available prior to the start of the new campaign.

Where better to start than with champions Chelsea. Their first title in 50 years was delivered with games to spare last season, and although bitterly disappointed by their European exit at the hands of eventual winners Liverpool (more about them later), the season must be viewed as a huge success for Jose Mourinho’s side. One loss, 15 goals conceded and a winning margin of 12 points separating them from second-placed Arsenal says it all.

Add to that the growing defensive rock comprised primarily of captain John Terry and keeper Peter Cech, the dazzling attacking play of Robben and Duff, plus of course the spending power of Roman Abromavitch, and on the face of it Chelsea look like being incredibly hard to displace as champions.

And with Sir Alex at the helm, backers of United can rest assured that his players will be fully motivated for the challenge that lies ahead.

United can be backed at 10/3 for Premiership glory and this price could look very generous come Christmas 2006 when the race will really begin to hot up.

Finally, no Premiership guide is complete without mention at least of the 2005 Champions League winners. They may have failed to secure a top-four finish in last season’s campaign, but following their heroic European triumph, confidence will be sky high, and with Steven Gerrard seemingly committed to the cause, the 25/1 about a Liverpool triumph looks the each-way value, especially as they are as short as 14/1 in places.

Activate your mind and body together through daily Yoga practice. The mind is more powerful than the sum of its thoughts and it must be controlled. The mind that is allowed to wander usually produces random and unproductive thought.

In varying degrees, most styles of Yoga tie the physical postures, proper breathing, and focused concentration, together, in one single session. This constant bonding of mind and body, creates inner harmony. This in turn, results in a productive mind-set. This gives the average Yoga student an advantage in productivity, organizational skills, creativity, and self-preservation.

You can enhance positive energy with daily Yoga practice. After each Yoga session, many students commonly mention how good they feel. Yoga classes, or Yoga sessions, give the practitioner a chance to discard negative feelings, worries, tension, and stress. This gives the average Yoga student a simple way to prioritize life’s daily problems.

As a result of this, the Yoga student is able to set and prioritize goals. Whether it is a serious goal or a whim, ideas that produce seeds of thought become reality, especially when followed by action. This formula will produce even more bursts of positive energy within the mind, resulting in a productive and positively charged mind-set.

Yoga students should be taught to identify, and when possible, remove negative energy from within the mind. Negative thinking is contagious and should be purged or quarantined, just like a disease. Identify those people who have it. If possible help them, but if not, avoid or isolate them. Negative thinking produces nothing of value and contributes to self-destruction. Therefore, you should learn to identify or leave negative surroundings that will stifle your self-improvement efforts.

Finally, listen to your heart and this will tell you if a decision is right or wrong. Some people call it a “gut feeling,” but you can feel it, “in your heart,” if a decision is morally correct, and know, if you can live with your actions.

Joint venture marketing is the fastest, easiest, and most profitable way to increase your client base and generate huge profits. But, one of the VERY FEW downsides is that you may run into unserious joint venture partners who can make the process slow, difficult, and unbeneficial.

“No-show” is the polite term for joint venture partners who make empty promises. Ever come across them? They are the all-talk-and-no-action types who seem to have all the enthusiasm in the world to joint venture with you in the beginning.

Initially, it looks as if there’s a strong “connection” during your meeting. They come across as being very open to ideas, and they may even appear to have the same values as you. Then suddenly… they don’t reply your emails, they don’t return your phone calls, and they make several “I’ve been busy” excuses for their inappropriate behavior.

This often happens when your joint venture partner is someone you’ve just met. It can occur whether you approached the joint venture partner first or whether they made the initial contact.

So how do you avoid this “no-show” situation or rectify it? Here are some helpful tips:

1. Be Clear About What You Expect

Right from the start, don’t be afraid to initiate a conversation about committing to the project. Without mentioning names, talk about your past experiences with no-show joint venture partners (or experiences you’ve heard of). Politely reassure your joint venture partner that you’ll operate efficiently, and that you expect the same from them. They’ll appreciate your direct and professional approach.

2. Make Them Commit To A Specific Date

Ask your joint venture partner for a convenient date that they can commit to for executing the venture. After you’ve finalized every aspect of the joint venture, send them a confirmation letter that outlines what has been agreed, including the date of commencement. Ask them to let you know whether the fixed date is still convenient for them. This gives them another thinking opportunity to ensure that they want to go ahead with the project.

3. Have A Contract In Place

Draft a contract with details of everything agreed. In the contract, insert a clause that explains what constitutes unacceptable behavior, and what will happen if such an “unlikely event” occurs. Make sure the both of you sign the contract. If you sign the contract and they don’t, they are not bound by it. Note that even with a contract in place, a joint venture partner who is in the habit of making empty promises may still breach the contract. However, having everything detailed in a contract covers your back, and will certainly shame the unserious joint venture partner.

4. Stay At The Top Of Their Mind

Some joint venture projects are finalized months in advance, and the parties involved may not need to discuss the project again until the implementation date gets closer. In this case, it’s easier to keep in touch with an old friend or associate than it is to do so with someone you’ve just met. If your joint venture partner is a new friend or associate, stay at the top of their mind by keeping in touch with them. For example, you may send them a birthday card or send information on an event you think they’ll be interested in. This will make it difficult for them to disappoint you because each positive contact will make them know, like and trust you more.

5. Let Them Know Who You Know

Relationships are so important in business, and so is reputation. Your joint venture partner will not want to disappoint you when they know that you have a quality network. Why? Because they would want to tap into your network of influential friends, colleagues and associates, and they are fully aware that those in your network will hear about their bad behavior. Subtly mentioning who you know to your joint venture partner will encourage them to keep their promises. Something as simple as “Since you’re a Chicago-based coach, you must know my friend Joe Smith,” is good enough. Your joint venture partner may not have heard of your influential friend, but by the time you explain what he does, they’d realize why they need to know him.

6. Cross Them Off Your List

If all else fails, then you’ll have to cross the unserious joint venture partner off your list of friends, colleagues and associates. After all, you want to ensure that you’re hanging out with the professional, ethical and credible crowd. If your joint venture partner doesn’t have the courtesy to reply your emails or return your phone calls, fails to keep promises, and can’t give a reasonable explanation other than the “I’ve been busy” routine, then you should be concerned about the future of your relationship with them. Your aim is to find credible centers of influence that you can joint venture with over and over again. A habitual no-show joint venture partner is likely to keep doing so, and you don’t want to go through such unnecessary headaches every time you plan a project with them.

When it comes to joint venturing, it’s always wise to start with those you already have a relationship with or someone being introduced to you by your friends and colleagues. Getting The Best From Your Body

The body automatically functions, and we automatically take it for granted! We expect our body to keep going and not complain, however much we abuse it. But it does complain, with headaches, backache, indigestion, colds, skin rashes: just a few of the minor warnings. Whether you are running a home business, major corporation or a family if you relate to these ‘mild’ complaints you just may need to pay attention to protect your most important asset: your health, your ability to think clearly and your emotional strength.

Without paying attention to keeping yourself well, you may slip into more serious warnings of ’self-abuse’ and progress to serious conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. A few simple changes can make all the difference to the long-term health of your body, the clarity of your thinking, the strength of your emotional well-being and the long-term viability of your self-propelled business!

Food is fuel

What you eat and drink provides your body with the fuel to carry out all the physical and mental activities that get you through each day, including breathing and blinking! Some foods, such as fruit and vegetables, provide excellent fuel, with lots of beneficial nutrients. Other foods provide the body with poor quality fuel laced with undesirable chemicals, such as over-processed junk foods. What percentage of your current diet is providing fuel-efficient, nutrient-rich food? Find out by keeping a diary over the following week - jot down everything you eat and drink and then analyze your fuel source. The better your fuel source, the longer your life expectancy…

…So improve your choice

Choose meals and snacks that are kind to the body, i.e. naturally-produced and chemical free. Fresh (preferably seasonal) fruit, vegetables and salads retain their nutritional content - they are ‘living’ foods. Avoid foods that have been over-processed, stored for too long or stored in contact with metal or cling-film. You could class these as ‘dead’ foods, with little to offer nutritionally. Variety is also vital, helping you obtain the broad range of nutrients your body needs.

Less is more

Eating large meals puts a great strain on the digestive tract. Choose smaller, more frequent meals, which help keep your fuel tank topped-up throughout the day. And never forget that the more you eat, the more your body has to either burn off or store as fat. So eat to live - don’t live to eat!

Give your stomach a fair chance

Slow down and enjoy your food. Chewing is essential - you have teeth for a reason - to assist the digestive process. Eating food quickly, or while stressed, disrupts digestion and the absorption of nutrients. The ‘how’ and when’ of eating is just as important as ‘what’ you eat.

Life-giving water

Nature’s nectar. Your body is 70% water and it needs to be daily replenished with a fresh supply to ensure that body cells are hydrated and energized. Ideally, we need to consume two litres of water every day.

Get active!

You need just enough activity to keep all your moving parts in good working order, lean and strong. Too much exercise uses up resources needed for normal growth, repair and maintenance, and creates premature wear and tear on the joints and ligaments.

So how much exercise are we talking about?

Enjoy a good brisk walk in the fresh air everyday - or even every second day - swing your arms, hold your head high, fill your lungs and lengthen your strike. Or, consider purchasing a home fitness video. There are plenty to choose from, just make sure it incorporates a good stretching regime to avoid pulling or straining any muscles. The same applies to any team sports or gym work - warm-up first. The message is, yes, you need to use your body to prevent it from ‘getting rusty’.

Relax!

Proper ‘quality time’ should not be confused with time spent watching endless television, or playing games on the computer. Energetic computer games and emotionally-charged TV soaps activate the release of ‘fight-or-flight’ stress chemicals - hardly a form of relaxation. Switch the TV off and take time-out once or twice a day for between 15-30 minute to rest your thoughts, and your body, completely. Sit or lie comfortably, close your eyes, breathe deeply and slowly, perhaps listen to restful music, and drift into your mind’s theatre of beautiful landscapes and memories. No interruptions, no demanding family or friends, just you and your attention focused on health, happiness and abundance…that’s quality time!

Sleep

We all need 6-8 hours quality sleep every night. Get to bed before midnight and start the day early and alert after a restful, refreshing sleep.

Love makes everything workable

For complete harmony of mind, body and spirit, the final ingredient needed is a huge helping of love. Surround yourself with people you love and who love you!
