So, you live in Houston and you need legal advice but you cannot afford it. The old adage, “nothing is free,” may be wrong. In Houston, legal advice can be obtained for free. One of the largest bar associations in the U.S. can be found in Houston, Texas. The HBA has decided to stay in line with its mission to provide service programs to the community and give residents of Houston legal advice for free.

A program called LegalLine was started and maintained by the HBA. There isn’t even any trickery involved. Several of these programs have been in place for over 20 years. This program offers simple legal advice and can help the residents of Houston get services they would otherwise have to pay for. This free legal service for Houston residents isn’t something that happens once per year. Bi-monthly services are issued to Houston residents. Houston residents can call for legal help on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Once through the line, the resident is able to speak with a licensed volunteer attorney. No English, no worries as free legal advice is available for Spanish and Vietnamese speaking residents as well.

For Houston residents, this is only the beginning of the free legal services offered. There are legal handbooks provided in a number of languages. The book’s cover the legal topics of Consumer Law, Elder Law, and Family Law. There are a number of other resources available as well, including a referral service for Houston lawyers, volunteer lawyers an even a dispute resolution center.
